Artist Statement

Developing my artist ability has been an eye opening experience for me. The growth spans beyond the artwork into my personal development. By unleashing the artist within I have become more aware of who I am. I am driven to create as surely as I need to breathe.
I have always been intrigued with the mind, and subconscious. I indulge in reading books by Jung, Freud, Nietzsche, Joseph Campbell, and Mother Goose, books about Physics, Philosophy, History, Mythology, Universal Theories and Conspiracy Theories. I tend to surround myself with things that inspire me or bring me joy: Escher designs, paintings by Mark Brown, Gus Fink and Joe Sorren. My house is full of toys; trolls, aliens, Alice in Wonderland and Dr. Seuss figures, Smurfs, Strawberry Shortcake dolls, Kiss dolls and urban vinyl.
Skydiving turns up as a theme again and again in my work as a result of being submerged in the sport and lifestyle for the past 11 years, and a fantasy world of creatures called the Freak Doody Heads has blossomed within my mind, and is beginning to emerge as a full blown universe with its own mythology through my art work. This universe was recently invaded by similar, (but different), creatures through custom vinyl art toys. This new medium is allowing me to connect in new ways to my life-long love of toys as creator instead of collector. I have been playing with the depth of meaning that these forms can take, and have been surprised to find that they provide an avenue of expression for some deeper thoughts and social commentary that I may have avoided previously which in turn is causing an evolution in other areas of my art.
The combination of evolving Freak Doody Head mythology and the effects of current events and conspiracy theories on my thought process and state of mind is bubbling forth in a frenzy of whimsical imagery, and my studio has never been messier.
