Developing my artist ability has been an eye opening experience for me. The growth spans beyond the artwork into my personal development. By unleashing the artist within I have become more aware of who I am. I am driven to create as surely as I need to breathe. I tend to surround myself with things that inspire me visually or bring me joy: boxes by Joseph Cornell, Escher designs, paintings by Mark Brown, Joe Sorren and Scott Musgrove. I am intrigued with the mind and subconscious, I indulge in reading Nietzsche, Joseph Campbell, books about Physics, Philosophy, Mythology, and Universal Theories, Chuck Palanuick and Mother Goose. My house is full of toys; trolls, aliens, stuffed bees, Alice in Wonderland and Dr. Seuss figures, Smurfs, Strawberry Shortcake, Kiss dolls and new vinyl artist toys. Skydiving turns up as a theme again and again in my work as a result of being submerged in the sport and lifestyle for the past 11 years. I combine both of my passions and feel very fortunate to be able to do so. A fantasy world of creatures with their own mythology has blossomed within my mind, and is beginning to emerge as a full blown universe through my work. The Freak Doody Heads come from another realm and truly make themselves. I sit down with a piece of clay and then BANG! there they are. Somehow all of the images I create blend into a cohesive mass of chaos that explains how I see the ever changing universe. |
